Historical procession of Sant’Alessandro
Every year from the Aragonese Castle of Ischia a procession, made up of more than 300 participants, animates the streets of the island in a structured route of 4 km which, through the most important streets of the historic center, connects the main Ischia monument to the village of Sant ‘Alexander. The procession opens with the Greek colonizers, who in the 8th century BC. by founding Pithekoussai, they made the island the first colony in the Mediterranean. Through a path that winds through centuries of history, we meet the protagonists of the Italian Renaissance with the families and characters who made it populated with legends: the D’Avalos, the Colonna, the Aragonese court, the marquises of Vasto, kings and queens , princes and court dignitaries, whose costumes, reworked after careful studies on prints and portraits of the time, repopulate the streets of the island for a day. The glories of the eighteenth century followed with the Kingdom of the Bourbons and the French decade. Traditional popular costumes are present: farmers, fishermen, spinners, fan sellers, who recall the ancient arts and crafts linked to the territory.
The historical procession of Ischia costume will start from the Aragonese Pontile (Peer) of Ischia with the twinned groups and will move along the following streets: Pontile Aragonese, Via Luigi Mazzella, Via A. Sogliuzzo, Via F. Sogliuzzo, Corso Vittoria Colonna, Via Roma, Via lasolino up to Palazzo D’Ambra.
